What Are Raspberry Ketones?
You've probably heard of Raspberry Ketones. They've been featured on the Doctor Oz show and are said to be an effective weight loss supplement, especially when combined with a balanced diet and a regular exercise routine. Ketones are one of the hottest dietary supplements on the market right now and are flying off shelves everywhere.
While most people have heard of ketones, there's a lot of confusion as to exactly what they are. Raspberry ketones are one of many aromatic compounds found in raspberries that combine to give them their aromatic essence. They've been in use for many years by manufacturers looking to add the aroma of raspberries to foods, candies, soaps and candles, but have only recently become popular as a dietary supplement.
Do Raspberry Ketones Work?
Preliminary research has shown promising results. In a often-quoted study published in Life Sciences in May of 2005, scientists revealed raspberry ketones prevented the gain of belly fat in lab animals fed a high-fat diet. They also helped prevent fat build-up in the liver. Another study published in 2010 in the scientific journal Planta Medica revealed similar results and led scientists to suggest raspberry ketone "holds great promise as an herbal medicine" due to its ability to alter lipid metabolism.
While the initial studies of the effect of raspberry ketones on lab animals have shown promising results, there hasn't been much research done on humans. A study published in 2013 in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition found a dietary supplement containing raspberry ketones and a number of other compounds accelerated weight loss when taken as part of a diet and exercise weight loss program.
Another study done in 2006 found topical application of 0.01% raspberry ketone promoted hair growth in 50% of human test subjects with alopecia and increased cheek skin elasticity. This seems to indicate raspberry ketone may be able to combat the signs of aging when applied topically. There are a handful of creams containing raspberry ketone available commercially.
Are There Any Risks?
There currently isn't enough information to determine the risks of raspberry ketones when used as a dietary supplement. According to WedMD.com, raspberry ketons might cause feelings of jitteriness, rapid heartbeat and it may increase blood pressure. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should steer clear of raspberry ketones until more information is available.
So, Do They Work?
More studies on the effect of raspberry ketone on humans are needed before any solid conclusions can be drawn. They don't appear to be the miracle fat-burning supplement some companies would have you believe they are, but may be an effective way to accelerate fat metabolism as part of a coordinated diet and exercise plan.
If anecdotal evidence is to be believed, the supplements currently on the market are largely being met with positive reviews.
